Brea is a city in northern Orange County, California. Its name comes from the Spanish word for "tar." As of the 2010 census, there were 39,282 people living there. It's 53 km (33 miles) south of Los Angeles. Brea is part of the greater Los Angeles area. The city started out as a place where crude oil was made. Later, citrus production helped the city grow. Now, the large Brea Mall and the recently redeveloped Brea Downtown make it an important shopping center.
